We bought our first mountain horse the summer of 2000. A sweet little bay filly Goldfingers Gypsy, by a Mountain Pleasure stallion. At that time I had never heard anything about Mountain Pleasure Horses and only a small amount about the Rocky Mountain Horse.
Before choosing to breed the Mountain Pleasure Horse we started alot of research into the Rocky Mountain, Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horse & Mountain Pleasure breeds. I searched web sites, called several farms, and joined all three mountain horse associations. We went back to Kentucky a few times for the World shows for the Mountain Pleasure, Rocky Mountain and the Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horse to see the horses up close and find out what was the difference. We now go back to KY to look for the best stud we can find for the mares. We believe training begins with breeding. Temperament is high on my list, along with confomation and gait, color is the last thing I look for. Our mares do not carry the silver dapple gene so we don't have any ASD problems. We handle the babies so they give to the touch, stand for vet & farrier, and to come when called. When they are old enough for training I send them over to Allison Smart at www.Smart-Strides.com where they get a balance of arena and trail rides.
If you are looking for a great baby to start yourself or one undersaddle give us a call.
